巴里の素材
僕が勤務する事務所は、2003年の設計競技で「Helold-100 Logements-」という
集合住宅を獲得した。巴里19区に建設予定。
現在、この敷地内で地質汚染が発覚し、土壌改良の検討も含め建設が先送りになっている。
敷地の土の話をしているときに、この物件を担当しているPhilippeが面白いことを教えてくれた。
巴里の地下には無数の空洞があるということ。
と言うのも、巴里の地下は『石切り場』となっていて、巴里に建つ建築物はその石を積むことで作られているという。観光名所となっている共同地下墓地『カタコンブ（catacombes）』も元々は石切り場跡だそうだ。
古い（土着的？）建築物はその地方で良く取れる素材によって作られる。これが、各地方の町並みの色や素材感を決定しているのは常識だけど、大都市巴里の町並みが、『周辺で取れる素材』ではなく、『地下にあった素材』を直接地上で再構成することで成り立っていると聞かされて驚いた。
つまり『巴里の町並み=巴里の地下の色』という事実。
現在、新しい建築物を建設する場合、『石切り場跡』の空洞はコンクリートで充填され、後に新しい建築物の基礎が打たれる。そして、その上に載る新しい建築物にはグローバルに流通する素材、鉄、コンクリート、ガラスが使われる。
『土着性』を賛美するわけでもないし、これを素材の問題に単純化して考えるつもりは全くないけれど、巴里の建築物が持っている土地との親密な関係が、新たな建設によって少しずつ失われていることに寂しさを感じた。
